Why License Suspensions Are Increasing Interest in Electric Bike Subscriptions

Why License Suspensions in Switzerland Are Increasing Interest in Electric Bike Subscriptions In 2023, driver’s license suspensions in Switzerland reached 80,015 cases, marking a 0.9% increase compared to 2022. This rise highlights the growing challenges faced by drivers who lose their licenses. In response, monthly or annual electric bike subscriptions offer a practical, economical, and eco-friendly mobility solution. At Bicy, we provide an alternative tailored to everyone’s transportation needs. Key Statistics on License Suspensions in Switzerland According to official data: 58.7% of license suspensions result from serious offenses, such as speeding, drunk driving, or inattentiveness. 14.1% of cases are due to driving incapacity, often linked to illness or disability—a record-high figure. Foreign license bans have also increased by 17.8%, totaling 21,133 cases in 2023. Meanwhile, the number of new drivers is decreasing: only 75,712 licenses were issued in 2023, compared to 83,626 the previous year. These figures highlight the growing importance of finding alternative transport solutions, particularly for those affected by license suspensions. Electric Bikes: The Best Alternative to Cars Electric bikes provide an immediate and accessible solution for those who lose their licenses. Here’s why they are the perfect choice: Mobility Without a License Unlike cars or scooters, electric bikes do not require a driver’s license, making them an ideal way to stay mobile even after a suspension. A Solution for Every Need At Bicy, we offer a variety of e-bikes, including standard electric bikes (25 km/h), speed bikes (45 km/h), and cargo bikes for carrying heavy loads or transporting children. Home Maintenance & Repairs Our subscriptions include delivery and home repairs, ensuring a hassle-free experience. A Cost-Effective Choice Compared to car expenses (insurance, fuel, maintenance), an electric bike is a much more affordable option—perfect for urban and suburban commutes. An Eco-Friendly Alternative Switching to an electric bike reduces your carbon footprint and promotes sustainable mobility while maintaining a modern and comfortable commute. Avoiding Risky Driving Behaviors The majority of license suspensions (58.7%) in Switzerland are linked to speeding and drunk driving. At Bicy, we provide a complete solution for individuals facing a license suspension: ✔ Flexibility – Choose between monthly or annual subscriptions. ✔ Simplicity – Delivery, maintenance, and repairs are all included for total peace of mind. ✔ Affordability – A budget-friendly and eco-conscious alternative to cars. Comment choisir son vélo électrique (e-bike)?

How to Choose the Right Electric City Bike for Your Daily Commute 🚴‍♀️ When selecting an electric city bike, several factors need to be considered to ensure you find the model that best suits your urban commuting needs. Here are some tips to help guide your decision: 1. Comfort: Frame: Look for a comfortable frame that allows you to sit upright, promoting an ergonomic posture for city rides. Suspension: A city electric bike with a front fork or a suspension seat post will absorb the bumps of urban roads more effectively. Saddle: Ensure the saddle is comfortable and suitable for your body type to avoid discomfort on long rides. 2. Ease of Use: Step-through frame: Opt for a model with a low step-through frame for easy mounting and dismounting, especially if you're wearing city clothing. Higher frames are generally more stable. Weight: Choose a lightweight and maneuverable bike for better handling in crowded streets and easy portability if needed. 3. Battery Range: Battery Capacity: Make sure the battery offers enough range for your daily commutes. A 400-600 Wh battery is usually adequate for city rides. Keep in mind that the range also depends on factors like the route's incline, your weight, and the level of assistance you choose. 4. Pedal Assist System: Motor: Opt for either a hub motor or a mid-drive motor for consistent and effective assistance. A mid-drive motor improves bike handling as the weight is centered. Assist Levels: Look for a bike with multiple assist levels to adjust the power to your needs. Most electric bikes come with 3 modes:Eco: For long distances with minimal effortNormal: For regular use with optimal assistanceBoost/Turbo: For maximum power, ideal for steep hills or when you need extra speed 25 km/h or 45 km/h? For longer distances (over 30 km/day), we recommend the 45 km/h bikes. However, 25 km/h bikes are more than sufficient for most urban commutes. Keep in mind that in city traffic, it's difficult to reach 45 km/h, so always stay vigilant. 5. Safety: Brakes: Efficient brakes, such as hydraulic disc brakes, are essential for safe city riding, especially in urban traffic. Lighting: Ensure the bike is equipped with powerful front and rear lights for maximum visibility, particularly at night. Remember, front lights are mandatory on all electric bikes in most regions. 6. Equipment and Accessories: Rear Rack: Ideal for carrying groceries or personal items. Mudguards: Protect against splashes from mud and water on rainy days. Kickstand: Practical for easily parking the bike. Transmission: A multi-gear system will allow you to adapt to different types of terrain in the city. 7. Test Multiple Models: Nothing beats a real-world test ride to assess comfort, handling, and performance. Test out several models to find the one that feels the most natural for your body and riding style. By following these tips, you should be able to find an electric city bike that meets your needs for comfort, safety, and efficiency in your daily commute. Happy riding! 🚲

Electric bikes 25 and 45 km/h, bike lanes, safety, and obligations

Can I ride on bike paths with my 45 km/h electric bike ? Yes, bike paths and lanes are accessible to all electric bikes (E-Bikes), including speed pedelecs (45 km/h). The Road Traffic Act (LCR) states that bike paths and lanes are reserved for cyclists, and cyclists are required to use them. Cyclists must adhere to the traffic code; therefore, be careful not to exceed speed limits, especially in 20 or 30 km/h zones where bikes, whether electric or not, can easily exceed these limits. The use of speedometers (bike computers) will also be mandatory from 2027, as announced by the Confederation in 2022. Cyclist Obligations We remind you that a license plate and helmet are mandatory when riding a 45 km/h electric bike. Helmets are also strongly recommended for all types of bikes. Since April 2022, all electric bikes must have their lights on, even during the day. At all times, cyclists must keep both hands on the handlebars: no texting or using the phone with one hand, and no carrying bulky objects if both hands are not on the handlebars, under penalty of fines. Safety Tips and Caution Be visible! As bike paths are increasingly crowded and speed bikes (45 km/h) are much faster than regular bikes, you should adjust your speed to avoid accidents, which are caused by the cyclist 82% of the time according to Suva. Also, be cautious of motorists who are often surprised by the speed of e-bikes. Bikes and Pedestrians Sidewalks are reserved for pedestrians, so it is prohibited to ride a bike there. Only children under 12 are allowed. In pedestrian zones, pedestrians have priority, and cyclists must ride slowly. There are also shared paths for both bikes and pedestrians; make sure to adjust your speed and stay alert. Make sure to get off your bike when using a pedestrian crossing. Conclusion Speed pedelecs are subject to the same restrictions as all other bikes (except for the helmet and driver's license requirements). They simply require more vigilance and caution. Coexistence between cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians is now inevitable and necessary. Let’s be responsible and careful to avoid accidents, fines, and insults! 4o mini

How Much Does It Really Cost to Recharge an Electric Bike ?

With the current times and the war in Ukraine, the prices of gasoline and diesel keep rising. Have you ever calculated how much it costs to recharge your electric bike? How to Calculate the Cost of an E-Bike Recharge? Since the battery of your bike has a capacity expressed in Watt-hours (Wh) or Kilowatt-hours (which is 1,000 Wh, noted as kWh), you can easily calculate the cost of a recharge by multiplying this number by the price of a Kilowatt-hour in your region. Battery Capacity The capacity of your battery is directly listed on it. It is also specified in your bike’s user manual. Redsport bikes come with batteries ranging from 500 to 618 Watt-hours (that is, 0.5 to 0.618 kWh) – these are high-quality batteries with a long range, capable of going up to 120 km on a single recharge. For comparison, here’s how much your household consumes annually: 2-room apartment: 1,600 kWh – or 2,600 batteries 4-room apartment: 2,500 kWh – or 4,050 batteries 5-room house with electric water heater, dryer, and electric heating: 25,000 kWh – or 40,450 batteries Source: Federal Electricity Commission ElCom Electricity Price The electricity rate in Geneva for a normal household with typical consumption in 2022 was 21.5 CHF cents per Kilowatt-hour. Here are a few examples of rates in 2022 for the French-speaking part of Switzerland: Lausanne Industrial Services: 20.36 ct/kWh at a fixed rate, or 15.03 to 24.56 ct/kWh depending on off-peak or peak hours and whether the energy is from renewable sources. Geneva Industrial Services: 23.16 ct/kWh at a fixed rate, or 16.62 to 34.16 ct/kWh depending on off-peak or peak hours and whether the energy is from renewable sources. These figures are similar across Switzerland, e.g., Romande Energie in 2022 for Vaud: ~20.92 ct/kWh, or 15.10 ct to 23.72 ct depending on off-peak or peak hours. Just a Few Cents to Ride a Bike! Using the above rates, we get: Minimum: 0.5 kWh battery x 15.03 ct/kWh in Lausanne during off-peak hours = 5.515 cents Average in Vaud: 0.618 kWh battery x ~21.5 ct/kWh = 13.29 cents Maximum: 0.618 kWh battery x 34.16 ct/kWh in Geneva during peak hours with solar energy = 21.11 cents Assuming an intensive daily use of one battery to commute to work, we multiply the above numbers by 20 days. This results in a cost between CHF 1.10 and CHF 4.22 per month, which is equivalent to 0.5 to 2.5 liters of gasoline! Conclusion: riding an electric bike costs about the price of a restaurant meal per year! Are you now ready to leave your car or public transport behind for your short trips? If you're still having doubts, also think about the planet and the time savings that await you.
